My first memory of manipulating matter to create pictures was as a very young child playing with the soft hot tar that was in the road , and using it to paint designs onto my arms and legs. I didn’t get in trouble until the second time I did it. After that, I used more conventional materials (paper and crayons) to express myself. From that time on, drawing has always been in some form or other, my primary means of expression. I was able to make sense of my feelings and observations through drawing, and it was one of the few areas from which I received positive reinforcement. So I kept on doing it. I even got to do it for college, where I earned a B.F.A from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
Over the years, I continued to paint and draw, sometimes illustrations for books, commissions, or just for myself. One day, a few years ago, I came across an old fashioned wood burning tool. I began to burn all the wooden things in my house. Coffee tables, end tables, chairs, dressers, bowls, etc. Once I started burning I could barely stop to eat and sleep. The smell of the burning wood, the color of the burn in the wood and the immediate results of the artwork itself were intoxicating. This is where my obsession with burning was born.
My work can be seen in person at Hacienda, 126 Main Street in Nyack, or online @ jsandek.wordpress.com
