OUR MISSION

hungryhollow_1We, the owner/members and the staff of the Hungry Hollow Co-op, are dedicated to providing, at a just value, the healthiest foods available, in an atmosphere of warmth and friendliness.

We encourage the production and use of biodynamic and organic foods and products that promote health in individuals and the local and worldwide environment.

We strive to cultivate a rich community life, locally and regionally, through education and participation in the cooperative form of business.

We seek to serve an ever-growing and diverse community of people by providing access to the healthy foods, products and quality of life we espouse.

We support the responsibility of business to positively transform society and the use of profit to fuel socially minded initiatives; we seek mutual responsibility and fairness in our relationships with suppliers, staff and customers.

OUR PRODUCTS

GROCERY We offer a full line of packaged and frozen foods, as well as fresh meat, green cleaning supplies and paper goods, and wholesome pet food. Of course we carry brands like Eden, Bionature, Amy’s and Cascadian Farms; what sets our selection apart is our grocery manager, Luz’s, dedication to local and small producers. New York state maple syrup, Emmaline’s hot sauce, Adirondack ice cream--whenever possible, we source quality regional foods.

hungryhollow_2PRODUCE Our entire selection is organic and we offer local and biodynamic produce whenever it is available. During summer months, we often feature just-picked greens from the Fellowship Farm down the road--come in early, they’re usually gone by noon. Summer also brings colorful bouquets from Bluefield Farm, and every autumn we look forward to Threshold Farm’s biodynamic apples. Produce manager Skip keeps it interesting with offerings like kiwi berries, burdock root, fresh tumeric, and biodynamic kafir limes when available. Call if you’re looking for something specific, or just come in and see what‘s in store. The Hungry Hollow Co-op is your best resource for organic, biodynamic, and locally grown produce!

DAIRY Local and regional farms are well represented year-round in our dairy department. Customer favorites include Milk Thistle, Ronnybrook and Maple Hill Creamery. From Duryea Farm just down the road, to Butterworks in Vermont, Nieves stocks our dairy shelves with the freshest tastiest yogurt, milk, cheese and other dairy products, as well as organic soy and coconut based dairy substitutes.

DELI Our deli department carries a wide variety of prepared macrobiotic foods, vegetarian salads, and sandwiches. We feature a large assortment of organic lacto-fermented vegetables, including biodynamic sauerkrauts from Hawthorne Valley Farm. Sliced sandwich meats from Applegate Farms are all organic. We all think Tony B’s pesto alla Genovese is the best, and have a hard time keeping it on the shelf! Hummus, guacamole, dips and sauces can all be found here, in addition to a nice selection of smoked fish. Keep that kimchi coming Nieves!

BAKERY We get daily deliveries of bread and pastries from some of the finest bakeries in our area. We've recently added Bread Alone, baked upstate using all-organic ingredients. We carry Hawthorne Valley breads, cookies, and cinnamon rolls, so you don’t have to drive to Harlemville! If vegan and gluten free cookies are your thing, we’ve got ‘em. Good Day Sunshine treats, made by local baker Pam, sell out muy rapido--you’ll love them even if you’re not gluten-free. Real NY-style bagels, crispy baguettes, sprouted-grain bread, even delectable treats from Patisserie Didier Dumas in Nyack--it's all here at the Co-op.

KITCHEN In our kitchen, Kathleen and her dedicated staff start your day with hot breakfast selections including egg sandwiches, organic oatmeal, and hash-brown sweet potatoes. We are now offering three soups every day, as well as hot sandwiches and bean wraps at lunchtime (many available gluten-free). Daily rounds of sandwiches, salads, and wraps provide variety and ease for quick lunches and snacks. The kitchen offers dinner every weekday: individual grab-n-go seafood or chicken, and a side or two.

hungryhollow_3BULK In the Beginning, there was Bulk. And as our store has grown, so has our bulk department, which features over 120 organic products, and more than 80 herbs and spices from Frontier. Most items are packed in small bags here in store for your convenience. We carry Fair Trade coffee from our friends at Equal Exchange, as well as biodynamic coffee from Altura. Most of our fruits and nuts come from Tierra Farm, located upstate. They are a 100% certified organic distributor known for their quality and freshness. Mary is proud to offer grain and flour from Wild Hive Farm and Cayuga Pure Organics, grown and milled in NewYork state, as well as Cayuga’s beans, in our bulk department, in addition to other basic (and not-so-basic) grains and beans.

BODY CARE Small companies and local producers really shine in our Body Care Department. In addition to carrying a full line of Dr. Hauschka and Weleda products, we feature Badger and Aubrey, as well as Soap & Paper Company and Primitive Lipcolors, both made right here in the Hudson Valley. From soaps and shampoos to ear candles and baby care, Marcia strives to find products that are as pure as possible.

VITAMINS & SUPPLEMENTS Hungry Hollow Co-op’s focus is food, but we carry a carefully selected line of vitamins and supplements. Our quality standard is high, and accordingly, we look for the best products from a few selected companies, which are respected in holistic, homeopathic and anthroposophic medicine. Department manager Lisa stocks a broad range of products from True Botanica, Weleda, Boiron, New Chapter, Oregon’s Wild Harvest (now Demeter certified) and Rainbow Light, and is happy to special order for you if we don’t have what you need. We strive to carry products that are time-tested, and are not just the latest fad.

HOUSEWARES Hand-picked by Eri, the Mistress of Good Taste, our houseware and gift selections reflect the co-op’s dedication to finding the finest quality items from near or far. Some of our favorites are Hudson Valley Glassworks and Brookhouse Pottery, which is made right here in Chestnut Ridge. We carry Chambaware black clay pottery from Columbia; it is a durable pottery made from river clay by native artisans using traditional methods. From bamboo cutlery and plates to fair-trade African market baskets, locally produced plant-dyed yarn to beeswax candles, you’re sure to find a special gift, or a practical household item that’s just what you need.
